The short version: midterms are an allocation problem before they are a studying problem. Unlike finals, the rest of the course keeps running — homework, labs, a job — so the hours available are fewer and more fragmented than the week appears to hold. Rank each exam by its weight multiplied by how far you are from the grade you want, not by which comes first, and work out the score each one actually requires before deciding where the hours go. That arithmetic takes twenty minutes and routinely reveals that one exam needs two hours and another needs twelve.
Why midterms are harder than finals
Finals week has a shape that helps you: classes have stopped, the exams are the only thing on the calendar, and the schedule is published weeks ahead.
Midterms have none of that. They arrive in week six or nine, scheduled independently by professors who have no idea what else is on your plate, on top of a course load that carries on regardless. The homework still comes. The lab still meets. The shift still happens.
So the practical constraint is not motivation or technique. It is that a week which appears to contain seven days of study time actually contains perhaps twelve usable hours, broken into fragments between other obligations — and those twelve hours have to cover three exams that want thirty between them.

Step 1: find out what each exam is worth
Before any studying. This takes ten minutes and determines everything after it.
For each exam, pull two numbers: its weight from the syllabus, and your current standing in that course. Multiply the weight by the distance between where you are and where you want to finish, and you have a rough ranking of where an hour buys the most.

The chemistry exam deserves most of the week even if it happens to be scheduled last, and the art history exam deserves an evening even if it is on Monday. Studying in calendar order is the default, feels responsible, and hands your scarcest resource to whichever professor booked the earliest room.
Step 2: calculate the score each exam actually needs
For each course, work out the score that holds the grade you can realistically finish with. The formula is the same one that applies to finals:
Needed score = (target − current grade × (1 − exam weight)) ÷ exam weight
Run it for the grade you want and the grade you can live with. The gap between those two numbers is the real information. In the chemistry example above — 79 percent going in, a 30-percent midterm, wanting to finish at 83 — the exam needs about 92. Wanting to finish at 80 needs about 82. That is a ten-point spread, and it tells you whether this is a two-evening exam or a two-week one.
Doing this for all three exams produces something more useful than a study plan: it tells you which exams are already decided. An exam that needs a 45 to hold your grade does not need a week. Step 3: schedule against real hours, not the whole week
Write down what the week actually contains before allocating anything: classes, labs, work shifts, commute, sleep. Whatever remains is the budget, and it is always smaller than expected.
Two things follow from working in real hours rather than days.
Spread each subject rather than blocking it. Three two-hour sessions across three days beat one six-hour session, and the effect is large enough to matter over a week. If you have twelve hours and three exams, twelve separate hour-long sessions spread across the fortnight will outperform three four-hour blocks even though the total is identical.
Put the hard subject where you are sharp. Not at midnight after a shift. If your only reliable clear stretch is a morning gap between two classes, that gap belongs to organic chemistry, not to the reading you could do half-asleep.

Step 4: leave the last day alone
Do not schedule new material into the final day before an exam.
The last day is for consolidation — reviewing what you already know, working practice problems, sleeping properly. New material learned in the final twenty-four hours is the least reliable thing in the exam room, and the hour spent on it costs more in sleep than it returns in recall.
This is also where a mid-week reassessment belongs. By day four you will know whether the chemistry plan was optimistic. Adjusting then, deliberately, is better than discovering it the night before and reallocating in a panic.
The failure mode worth naming
The most common midterm mistake is not studying too little. It is studying evenly.
Equal hours across three exams feels fair and produces a worse outcome than deliberate imbalance, because the courses are not equally weighted, you are not equally far from the grade you want in each, and the marginal hour is worth wildly different amounts in each one. The student who gives twelve hours to chemistry and two to art history usually finishes the term ahead of the one who gave five, five and four — and did more total work.
