What Grade Do I Need on My Final Exam?

The short version: the score you need on a final is (target − current grade × (1 − final's weight)) ÷ final's weight, where every number is a percentage and the final's weight comes from your syllabus, not from a guess. If your current grade is 88 percent, the final is worth 30 percent, and you want to finish at 90 percent, you need 94.7 percent. The formula itself is one line — the errors come from the inputs: using your gradebook average when part of the course is still ungraded, forgetting that a category with no grades yet is not a zero, ignoring rounding and letter-grade cutoffs, and assuming a curve that may not exist. Worked examples, a reference table, and the four failure modes are below.

The formula

Let T be the overall percentage you want to end with, C your current grade in the portion of the course that has already been graded, and w the final exam's weight as a decimal (30 percent = 0.30).

Needed score = (T − C × (1 − w)) ÷ w

The logic is simpler than the notation. Everything that is not the final — that is, (1 − w) of the course — has already been settled, and it contributes C × (1 − w) points toward your total. Subtract that from your target and you are left with the points the final still has to supply. Divide by the final's weight to convert those points into a percentage on the exam itself.

Two properties of this formula are worth internalizing before you use it.

The final's weight is a lever in both directions. A heavier final makes a low current grade more recoverable, and makes a high one easier to lose. Students often think of a 40-percent final as a threat; it is equally an opportunity, and the same arithmetic produces both readings.

The answer is frequently above 100 or below 0, and both are informative. A needed score of 104 means the target is not reachable, and it is better to know that a week before the exam than to find out afterward. A needed score of 12 means your grade is effectively locked in and your studying time is better spent on a different course. Neither result is a calculation error.

Example 1: the straightforward case

Your syllabus says the final is worth 30 percent of the course grade. Everything else — homework, two midterms, participation — has been graded, and your average across all of it is 88 percent. You want to finish the course at 90 percent.

Plug it in: T = 90, C = 88, w = 0.30.

  • The graded 70 percent contributes 88 × 0.70 = 61.6 points toward your final total.
  • Your target of 90 minus 61.6 leaves 28.4 points that the final must supply.
  • 28.4 ÷ 0.30 = 94.7 percent on the final.

Now run the same numbers for a less ambitious target. To finish at 80 percent: (80 − 61.6) ÷ 0.30 = 18.4 ÷ 0.30 = 61.3 percent. To merely pass at 70: (70 − 61.6) ÷ 0.30 = 28 percent.

That spread — 94.7 to hold an A-minus, 61.3 to hold a B-minus, 28 to pass — is the actual decision-relevant information, and it is why calculating one target is usually a mistake. The gap between the score you need for the grade you want and the score you need for the grade you can live with tells you how much of your remaining week this exam deserves compared to everything else on your plate.

Example 2: when part of the course is still ungraded

This is the case that produces wrong answers, because the simple formula assumes C covers everything except the final. It usually does not.

Say the syllabus splits the course as homework 20 percent, midterms 30 percent, participation 10 percent, final 40 percent. You have a 92 percent homework average and an 81 percent midterm average. Participation has not been assigned yet. You want a 90 overall.

Work in points rather than percentages, because the categories are not all settled:

  • Homework: 92 × 0.20 = 18.4 points banked
  • Midterms: 81 × 0.30 = 24.3 points banked
  • Total banked: 42.7 points out of a possible 100

Participation is the problem. It is worth 10 points and you do not know how many of them you will get. You have to assume something, and the assumption moves the answer:

  • Assume full participation credit (10 points): needed = (90 − 42.7 − 10) ÷ 0.40 = 37.3 ÷ 0.40 = 93.3 percent
  • Assume 85 percent participation (8.5 points): needed = (90 − 42.7 − 8.5) ÷ 0.40 = 38.8 ÷ 0.40 = 97.0 percent

A single assumption about a 10-percent category moved the required final score by nearly four points. The lesson is not that one assumption is correct — it is that you should run the pessimistic version and plan against that, because the optimistic version is the one that produces surprises.

Note also what did not happen: participation was never treated as a zero. An ungraded category is not a zero, and dropping it into the calculation as one would have told you that you needed 118 percent and that the course was already lost. Reference table: what you need, by final exam weight

The table below assumes you are walking into the final with an 85 percent in the graded portion of the course, and shows what the exam has to be for three common targets. It exists to make the shape of the relationship visible — a heavier final is both more recoverable and more dangerous.

Read down the first column and the point is unmissable: with an 85 going in, a 20-percent final cannot get you to a 90 no matter how well you do, while a 50-percent final can — needing a 95, but needing something rather than something impossible. Read down the third column and the same weight that rescued you becomes the risk: a 20-percent final requires a 10 to keep you above 70, while a 50-percent final requires a 55. Heavy finals amplify whatever happens in that room.

The practical consequence: the time to look at this table is week 3, not week 15. The weight of the final is printed in the syllabus on day one, and it determines whether your grade in this course will be decided gradually or all at once. That changes how much a bad midterm actually costs you, and it is knowable months before it matters.

The four ways students get this wrong

Using the LMS percentage as C. The number Canvas or Blackboard shows you is calculated over graded work only, and depending on how your instructor configured it, ungraded assignments may be excluded, treated as zero, or handled inconsistently between the two. If you plug a gradebook percentage into the formula without knowing which convention produced it, you are calculating from an unknown. Recompute from the syllabus weights and your actual scores.

Treating extra credit as ordinary weight. Extra credit adds to your earned points without adding to the denominator — that is what makes it extra. Five points of extra credit on a 10-percent category is not the same as a 10-percent category scored at 150. Add extra credit as bonus points to your banked total, not as another weighted category.

Ignoring the cutoff and the rounding. An 89.5 that rounds to 90 in one course is a B-plus in another, because rounding policy is set by the instructor and is often stated in the syllabus in one line that nobody reads. If your calculated requirement lands within a point of a letter boundary, find that line before you decide how hard to study. The difference between "I need an 89" and "I need an 89.5, unrounded" is a real difference in preparation.

Assuming a curve. Curves are common in some departments and nonexistent in others, and an instructor who curved last semester is under no obligation to do it again. Calculate the number you need without one. If a curve materializes, it is a windfall; if you planned around it and it does not, there is no recovery step available in December.

Special cases the formula does not cover

A dropped lowest score. If your syllabus drops the lowest quiz or homework grade, recompute your category average with that score removed before using it as C. This routinely moves a category average by several points, and in the right direction.

Points-based courses. Some courses are scored out of a total point pool rather than by weighted percentages — 1,000 points across the semester, with the final worth 250. The same logic applies, in points rather than percentages: subtract the points you have already earned from the points your target letter requires, and the remainder is what the final must deliver out of 250. If the syllabus gives you a point total, use it directly; converting to percentages first introduces rounding for no benefit.

A final that can replace a midterm. Some instructors let a strong final replace a weak midterm score. That changes w and C simultaneously and cannot be handled by one pass through the formula — calculate it both ways, with and without the replacement, and use the more pessimistic result to plan.

Mandatory minimums. A few courses require passing the final independently in order to pass the course, regardless of your overall percentage. This overrides everything above. It appears in the syllabus, usually once, and it is worth checking for specifically, because the formula will cheerfully tell you that a 28 is enough when a 60 is the real floor.

What to do when the number is impossible

If the arithmetic says you need a 104, the target is gone. That is genuinely useful information, and it is worth acting on rather than sitting with.

Run the formula again for the next letter down, and the one after that. There is almost always a target that is comfortably reachable, and knowing where the real boundary is converts a vague dread into a specific number — which is easier to prepare for and considerably easier to stop worrying about. Then check whether anything else is still open: outstanding extra credit, a revision policy on a paper, a participation component still being assessed. Those are small, but they move the banked-points total, which is the only part of the equation still under your control before the exam.

Then recalculate across your other courses, because the point of knowing an A is out of reach in one class is that the hours you were going to spend there are now available somewhere the number is still in play. What if my final can replace a low midterm score?

Calculate it twice — once with the replacement and once without — and plan against the more pessimistic result.
